Steering Wheel

Why is My Steering Wheel Shaking?

Have you noticed that your steering wheel is shaking on the roads of Omaha? In most cases, this issue is caused by an improper alignment of your tires. When the tires are unbalanced, you can start to notice a vibration in your steering wheel. The vibration may even affect the entire car. However, wheel alignment issues are not the only reason your steering wheel could be shaking. Honda of Lincoln is sharing a few possible causes below. If you think any of the following problems could apply to your vehicle, set up an appointment at our service center today.

Vibrating Steering Wheel: Five Common Causes

There are five main reasons why you may notice vibration in your steering wheel:

  1. Unbalanced wheels: The weight placement of your tires is important. If there is not even weight distribution when the tire is put on, vibration can occur. If your vehicle has a lightweight suspension system, this problem could be quite common. If the wheels remain unbalanced, it could lead to problems down the road with the shocks, struts, and other steering components. Fortunately, this is a simple fix. All you have to do is stop by our service center to have the wheels checked and balanced.
  • Misalignment: Another problem could be that your wheels are not in the proper position. To prevent this from happening, avoid obstacles like potholes and railroad tracks if possible. In addition to vibration, uneven tire wear could also be an indicator. Frequent tire rotations can help to mitigate alignment issues.
  • Bad bearings: If the bearings are not lubricated properly or they are damaged, that friction could cause your steering wheel to vibrate. If you notice that the steering wheel shakes only when you turn, bad bearings could be the cause. In some cases, only a simple cleaning will be necessary. Damaged bearings will need replacement, which can cost up to $430 including labor costs.
  • Suspension issues: If components of the suspension system are worn, loose, or the driveshaft is imbalanced, it can cause your car to shake. This is an easy problem to take care of, but these fixes should be done as soon as possible. If you continue to drive through Gretna with worn suspension components, it could lead to more expensive repairs in the future.
  • Brake issues: If you experience vibration in the steering wheel when you brake, it could be due toworn brake pads, defective brake discs, or worn shocks. It is not difficult to replace brake pads, but it could cost up to $300 per axle depending on where you have your vehicle serviced.
